The exhibition will shed light on the process of ballet performance creation, from creative conception to its realization on stage. The exhibits plunge visitors into the history of St. Petersburg ballet school, from Giselle to Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse) to Swan Lake and Petrushka. The exhibition is accompanied by interactive program and a special game space, which should attract both adults and children.

Ballet. Behind the Scenes is a touch to a mysterious world of theatre backstage, a golden opportunity to assist a ballet rehearsal, to hold in hands and even to try on a ballet shoe, to see old photos of dancers captured in a workflow “without gloss”. The exhibits will help draw a wider picture of ballet performance creation, from the conception embodied in libretto, the processes of scenery and costume designs making, orchestral score creation and rehearsals to premiere.

The exhibition introduces ballets created over 100 years ago that became the essential part of the fame of legendary St. Petersburg ballet school: Pas de Quatre, Giselle, Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse), The Nutcracker. Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, the masterpieces by M. Petipa, and The Swan and Petrushka, performances marking a new epoch in ballet. The exhibits include old photos of ballet dancers and performances, costume and scene designs, costumes and accessories from the collection of Saint Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music. You can also find here original scenery for several ballet performances. Children can attend interactive activities in a special area.
