View of the Lake - Dutch Drawings from the Barthold Suermondt Collection

Gemäldegalerie | Berlin
€5 - €10
The entrepreneur and banker Barthold Suermondt (1818 - 1887) had collected in the 1870s one of the most important private collections of paintings and drawings of old masters in Germany.

In 1873, however, he was forced to sell his art collection and offered it to the Royal Museums in Berlin. In December 1874, the registration of 418 drawings was recorded in the Kupferstichkabinett inventory. In the end a total of 435 drawings enriched the funds of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett. The vast majority of these leaves are works of Dutch masters of the seventeenth century. At that time, the drawings were no longer just the preparation of paintings, but gained the status of autonomous works of art. In addition to religious subjects, genre scenes, animal and animal studies, landscapes and maritime motifs form a coherent whole.

The exhibition shows twenty leaves exploring life on the water. About half of the Netherlands is less than one meter above sea level, about a quarter of the country. Due to its favorable geographical location, a large fleet of ocean-going ships and a cautious customs policy, the Dutch already controlled almost all the navigation of the continent at the beginning of the 17th century. The artists of this period expressed their enthusiasm for navigation in their works, this exhibition shows.

The exhibition is over since the 16/06/2018
