The Academy of Fine Arts, so named since 1803, is one of five academies that comprise the Institute of France also made up of the French Academy, the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles letters and the Academy of moral and political Sciences.

Descendant of the royal academies established in the seventeenth century, it is today, as other academies, with a special status that allows it to administer freely. To fulfill its mission to support the creation, the Academy of Fine Arts continues a sponsorship action in diversified forms in France and abroad: granting numerous awards for beginners or established artists, contests, financing artist residencies, granting aid to projects, events or associations of an artistic nature.

Serving this purpose, it manages its assets consists of donations and bequests and administers its important museum heritage consists including Musée Marmottan Monet and the Marmottan Library, the Fondation Claude Monet (Giverny) and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild (St. -Jean-Cap-Ferrat). It also maintains an active policy of partnerships with a large network of cultural institutions and sponsors.
