Originally built in the late eighteenth century, Theo Van Doesburg, Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp realize in 1928 a leisure complex avant-garde, including a drive-dancing, a ballroom and a focal spot bar. The system is designed as a total work of art to "put the man in the painting rather than before it" and allows for the first time to apply the aesthetic theories of the Dutch movement "De Stijl", then vogue in Europe. Considered too avant-garde, most sets will be modified and destroyed at the end of the thirties.

Following a restoration campaign orchestrated by the City of Strasbourg, rooms Aubette classified Historical Monuments since 2006 are again accessible to the public. The Aubette also offers a regular program of contemporary art (dance, performances, multimedia works ...).
