Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura

Free Admission
The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, the second by size after St. Peter.

According to tradition, the church stands on the burial place of the apostle Paul. The first Christians erected a sepulchral chapel here which then was converted into a basilica by Constantine and was consecrated by tradition, by Pope Sylvester I in the year 324.

From 385 the Temple of expansion work was begun and ended in 395, in the time of Emperor Honorius.

Soon the church became one of the important stages of the pilgrimage to Rome. Between 1825 and 1854 it was completely rebuilt by Pasquale Belli in cooperation with other architects.
