Presentation
The church of Santa Maria della Salute, a masterpiece of the architect Baldassarre Longhena, was built following a vow of the Senate who had promised to build a church if the virgin Mary ended the terrible epidemic plague that raged in 1629 and has claimed more than 47,000 victims.

The church of the Salute is built to an unusual plan for Venice, central plan and octagonal. The octagonal recalls the crown of the Virgin to whom the basilica is dedicated. You will find the Virgin atop the largest domes, while the smallest you'll find Saint Mark.

The main façade is in classical style, decorated with large semi-columns while the rest of the building is of Baroque inspiration. The church is crowned with two domes and scrolls giving it its peculiar appearance. Two bell towers complete the package.

Inside you will see a large central area surrounded by six chapels. The marble floors, geometric pattern is remarkable. The main altar houses a fine Byzantine icon of the Virgin and a group of sculptures depicting a Madonna and Child saving Venice from the plague.
