This sculpture became famous under the legend that the Mouth of Truth would have sliced the hand of all those who did not speak the truth. At the origin of the legend, a husband who did not trust his wife brought him before the Mouth of Truth to check his loyalty. The woman pretended to faint and her lover retrieved her in his arms. Following this, the woman swore in front of the Mouth of Truth that she had only been in the arms of her husband and the man who had just recovered her.

This story is one of the many legends that exist on this famous mask, which over the centuries continues to attract the attention of visitors.

The sculpture has large dimensions, is 1.75 meters in diameter and is dedicated to the God of the Sea, represented by a male face with beard and eyes, nose and mouth perforated.

The sculpture was located on the Bocca della Veritá Square until 1632, when it was moved to be placed outside one of the walls of the nearby church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where the mask is still exposed today
