The Museu Nacional (National Museum) is the oldest scientific institution in Brazil dedicated to the research and production of knowledge in memory.

Its history dates back to the founding of the Royal Museum by D. João VI, in 1818, whose main objective was to spread the knowledge and study of the natural sciences in Brazilian lands. Today, it is recognized as a center of research excellence in natural history and anthropology in Latin America. Holds a collection consisting of more than 20 million items spread over collections that serve as a basis for the research developed by the departments of Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Geology and Paleontology, Vertebrates and Invertebrates.

Christ the Redeemer is the work of French sculptor Paul Landowsky (1875-1961), Landowsky was chosen by the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa in charge of building the monument to mark the centenary of the Brazilian state.
