The building, consisting of some 55 rooms, houses the largest collection of contemporary Italian art, with over 4,400 works of painting and sculpture and about 13,000 drawings and prints by artists - mostly Italian - nineteenth and twentieth century.

On display are, among others, works by Canova, Hayez, Fattori, Segantini, Medardo Rosso, the great French masters (Courbet, Rodin, Degas, Van Gogh, Monet), Duchamp, Man Ray, Carra, Sironi, Morandi, exponents of American abstract expressionism of the 50s and 60s (Pollock, Tapies, Fautrier, Hartung, Burri, Capogrossi, Fontana, and Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mastroianni) and the post-informal (Festa, Schifano, Angeli).
