The cathedral became a place of international pilgrimage for believers and visitors, famous for its mosaics by De Rosen, a replica of the Doors of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the two labyrinths, stained glass, the altarpiece of Keith Haring dedicated to those who died from AIDS, the medieval and contemporary furnishings, as well as the 44 bells of the carillon, three organs and choir.

The first chapel was built in 1849 and another built nearby, was for a time called Grace Cathedral. It was destroyed by fire following the earthquake of 1906. Dean J. Wilmer Gresham began work on the current structure in 1928. Designed in the Gothic Revival style by Lewis P. Hobart, it was completed in 1964.
