At the heart of Paris, opposite the Louvre, discover the Domaine National du Palais-Royal, a "village within a city" that combines over four centuries places of power and pleasure.

The gardens and the Palais Royal were founded on the desire of Cardinal Richelieu, the "Palais-Cardinal" housing two large pools with fountains, statues, flower beds embroidery, two aisles of elms and a small wood, a beautiful set designed by the gardener Desgots king who was immediately open to the public. Bequeathed to Louis XIII after his death, and turned into "Palais Royal", the palace housed the royal family and was the scene of many historical events. In 1651, it was invaded by the Parisians alerted by rumors denouncing the flight of King Louis XIV. They went into the chamber of the young king who is 12 years to verify that he was sleeping peacefully!
In the gardens of the Palais Royal, Mazarin organized for King miniature hunts, also learned to ride there and make war on a small safe, happy years for the little king. Later Louis XIV attached instead installed there the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture (1661-1692).
1730, the gardens of the Royal Palace suffered their first transformations, old elms and chestnut trees are mostly slaughtered, leaving a big lonely pool, grass lawns lined with elm trees pruned into a ball and many benches surrounded by lime trees . Parisians flocked to it, short story, idlers and loafers conversing under the "Krakow tree." Diderot loved to sit to dream, about five o'clock in the evening.
The construction of the streets of Montpensier, Valois and Beaujolais significantly reduced the area of the garden that grew from 333m long and 143 wide and 275m long by 100m wide! Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres, so indebted, transformed the buildings and built new houses to be rented to bail out debt. The great animation that reigned there already is especially amplified, favored by the late opening of the Palais Royal gardens: 23h00 in winter and 1:00 am in the summer.
After the fire of the Opera, the Duke of Orleans built in 1786 in the middle of the garden, the location of the current pool, "the circus", an in-ground dining 3m 5m underground and above soil. Many festivals, food, games, dances, tableaux, as well as literary and scientific conferences punctuating the lives of gardens. The fire was due to its success, but the Parisians could then turn to the young Variety Theatre of the Palais Royal, which became our French Theatre in 1790.
