The Petit Trianon is an area of the Park of the Château de Versailles, in the Yvelines département, in France, with a small castle surrounded by gardens of various styles.

In meadows and groves to is the Grand Trianon, Louis XV, at the instigation of Madame de Pompadour, entrusts in 1748 Claude Richard, attended ten years later by Bernard de Jussieu, the development of a "garden of plants" which reflected his passionate interest in botanical experiences. The architect Gabriel decorates it a garden à la française and a menagerie for ordinary animals, in contrast to the near Menagerie Royal, more exotic, Louis XIV. He also built in the middle of the aisles of greenery fresh Salon and two mills leisure and relaxation, the french Pavilion.

In 1762, the King asked his first architect to build a castle of a new genre, which provides a view of the different gardens. Recognized as a masterpiece of architecture of nascent neoclassicism, this plan simple, sleek square building, with four façades decorated Corinthian order, combines the talents of Gabriel, sculptor Guibert and decorators who bring indoors the last taste, more refined than rich, in which a privileged place is reserved for nature and the rustic atmosphere. The ground floor is dedicated to the service, the "noble floor" includes reception rooms with three entresolees rooms for the use of Queen and the attic consists of the «apartments of the Lords. The Countess of Barry, who succeeded as favorite of Louis XV to the marquise de Pompadour, inaugurates the castle in 1769.
