Presentation
Founded in 1590 by monks coming from Bahia, the Benedictine Monastery of Rio de Janeiro was built at the request of the inhabitants themselves of the newly founded city of San Sebastian. Right in the center of the metropolis, is preserved here a place of quiet, peace, prayer and work, which translates into several activities held regularly. The two main ones are the daily celebration of the Divine Office and Mass with Gregorian chant. In addition, work inside the Abbey: the College of St. Benedict, the Lumen Christi Editions, the College of St. Benedict, the Emmaus retreat house and the São Bento Social Work. The monastery also maintains two retreat houses and meetings: the House of St. Benedict, in Alto da Boa Vista, and Sitio Bosom of Abraham, in Teresopolis.
