Musée Africain

Ile d'Aix | Ethnology - Natural Sciences
€3 - €4.5
Museum of the African island of Aix is a French museum located on the island of Aix in Charente-Maritime. Sharing the label museum in France with the Napoleonic Museum nearby, it features hunting trophies Baron Gourgaud (1891-1944) and a series of ethnographic objects from Africa, staged according to the customs of 1930.

The museum owes its existence to Napoleon Baron Gourgaud - great-grand-son of Baron Gaspard Gourgaud, first companion of Napoleon at St. Helena - who wanted to make available to the public zoological and ethnographic collections at the three expeditions that he conducted between 1913 and 1931 in Southern, Central and Eastern Africa - especially he participated in the Swedish Baron Bror safaris Blixen, husband of novelist Karen Blixen - which will be supplemented later by donations.
