Musée Archéologique

Saintes | Archéologie
The Archaeological Museum was founded in 1815 on the initiative of Baron Alexandre Chaudruc Crazannes. Bringing together a large lapidary collection after archaeological excavations and earthworks undertaken in the nineteenth century, the museum moved to the former municipal building abattoirs in 1931.

The main hall of the museum houses the reconstitution - approximate - the entablature of what was to be an important religious or secular monument of the ancient city, probably built around the first century. Among the items exhibited are a rich collection of sculptures, they are ornamental, religious or funeral.
