Figeac (Lot) houses the Champollion museum since 1986. More than 40,000 visitors per year can discover through the collections how writing has appeared in the world there are 5300 years.

In 1986, the first museum was opened through the efforts of the town of Figeac wishing to honor native son, Jean-François Champollion, the famous deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics. The museum is now housed in the birthplace of the Egyptologist who was thus saved from destruction and restored. In 1991, the city celebrated the bicentenary of the birth of Champollion Figeac creating instead of Scripture, just behind the museum.
