In 1862, Napoleon III created the Museum of Antiquities Celtic and Gallo-Roman, now today the National Museum of Archaeology in the royal castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Archaeological collections trace, more than one million years, human life from the origins to the Middle Ages. Today, the museum houses the largest collection of prehistoric art in the world and one of the richest archaeological collections in Europe.

In all, nearly thirty thousand items are on display, including the famous "Venus of Brassempouy" (Landes).
