The Nantes Art Museum is created as fourteen other provincial museums, by order of 14 consular fructidor Year IX (1801). Today, the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes is one of five major museums in the region, alongside Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Lille. It is listed as a historic monument since October 29, 1975.

Essentially art museum into the 1980s, the museum today and more tomorrow welcomes all creative forms of ancient art to contemporary art: painting, video, photography and installation. The vast field of rehabilitation of the museum includes an extension of 2000 square meters of exhibition space, creating an auditorium and educational rooms.

Temporary exhibitions and cultural activities reinforce the permanent collection to inform the visitor about the work of an artist or a historical period.
