The Museum of modern art of Saint-etienne Métropole is an international institution in the field of modern and contemporary art with over 19,000 works including 1,500 design pieces. It was inaugurated at the northern entrance of the city of Saint-Étienne, in the commune of Saint-Priest-en-Jarez (Loire), December 10, 1987.

The Museum of modern art of Saint-etienne Métropole holds one of the largest collection in France of works by the 19th century, 20th century and 21st century and offers one of the richest panoramas of international artistic creation of the 20th century (painting, sculpture, photography, design).

The Museum has a collection of old paintings that is not exposed to the public although important works are part. The Museum holds paintings by Louis Bréa, Charles Le Brun (entry of Christ to Jerusalem), Nicolaes Berchem, Willem Claeszoon Heda, Otto Marseus van Schrieck, Antonio Zanchi, Sebastiano Ricci (Abraham and the three angels), Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre, Charles Natoire, Théodore Géricault, Gustave Courbet, Hippolyte Flandrin (Polytes son of Priam, observing the movements of the Greeks to Troy), Alexandre Séon, Claude Monet, Maximilien Luce, and Armand Guillaumin (the umbrella pineBrusc, vicinity of Toulon). The sculptures include works by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Auguste Rodin and Antoine-Louis Barye.
