Presentation
The Municipal Museum of Bourg-en-Bresse, founded in 1854, is housed in a wing of the second of the three famous monasteries of the Royal Monastery of Brou. It has a rich collection of paintings, including Flemish and French, fifteenth century to modern art. Sculpture is also represented, especially the ancient religious sculpture. The main museum collection consists of 120 paintings donated by the mid-nineteenth Thomas Riboud (1765-1835), lawyer and member of the Ain who saved the abbey from destruction and protected as "National Monument".

We find, for the Flemish and Dutch paintings, four paintings from painter to Emperor Charles V, Bernard van Orley, including two portraits of Charles V and young Margaret of Austria, the founder of the Monastery of Brou and beautiful anonymous XV and XVI centuries and works by Jan de Beer, Adrien Ysenbrandt, Jan Brueghel the Elder.
French painting until the eighteenth century, we can see works of Benedict Alhoste Jean Jouvenet (his reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting), Nicolas Pierre Loir, René-Antoine Houasse Francois de Troy or Nicolas de Largillierre.

The other highlight of the museum is the collection of ancient religious sculpture (twelfth to the seventeenth centuries) exposed in the dining hall. The museum also houses a collection of furniture and earthenware.
