Musée de la Guerre de 1870

Gravelotte | History - Fine Arts
€3.5 - €5
Opened in 2014, the museum is the only one devoted entirely to the history of the war of 1870 and the annexation of Alsace and part of Lorraine to the German Empire (1871-1918). It takes a new approach to the issues raised by this conflict: German unity, life during annexation, tensions at the approach of the First World War ...

The permanent exhibition of 900 m² presents French and German collections of particular rarity. Military objects stand alongside remarkable paintings, sculptures, monuments and objects of everyday life.

In a setting of astonishing modernity, the museographic journey is both aesthetic and educational. The visitor becomes aware of history through the history of men retraced by their personal effects, their photographs and their testimonies. In his visit, the public is accompanied by numerous audiovisuals.

The museum is located on the scene of the fighting in August 1870, in front of the most important memorial of the War of 1870: the Hall of Remembrance. The visitor can extend his tour by discovering other nearby monuments and trails evoking the conflict.
