The city of Épinal is known for its tradition of decorations. Cartiers and dominotiers originally, the imagiers of Epinal produced leaves since the 18th century images but these are the Pinot and Pellerin, imagery that make his fame in the 19th century. To enhance this heritage, the city of Epinal created in 2003 the Museum of the Image, which today manages one of the largest collections of popular images French and foreign from the 17th century to the present day.

The Museum of the Image retains numerous leaves produced in major french coloured-print workshops centres from the 17th century to the present day. But it is particularly rich period of the 19th century who sees the establishment of the imagery of the industrial era in the East of France (Epinal, Metz, Jarville, Mousson...). Foreign imagery are also present: Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Austria... but also India, Japan, China... Some elements of printing (woodcuts and lithographic stones) come mainly from the imagery of Epinal.
