Musée des Augustins

Hazebrouck | Fine Arts - History
€1.5 - €3
The Municipal Museum occupies the ground floor of an old convent building built from the seventeenth century. When it was inaugurated by Abbé Lemire in 1927, the main themes of his collections were thus defined: local history and popular traditions, painting of the Southern Netherlands Ancients, French painting of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The visitor is first welcomed by the giant Roland, who like the other processional giants of the city of Hazebrouck, is present at the Museum throughout the year. Under the guise of a knight in arms, Roland echoes the legendary lord of Hazebrouck who died on the crusades. The family consisting of Tisje-Tasje, Toria, Babe-Tisje, and Zoon-Tisje occupy one of the halls devoted to regional ethnology. These five giants belong to the philanthropic association the Friends of Tisje-Tasje and are associated with major local events (procession, carnival, ...).

The reconstitution of a traditional Flemish cooking gives to see various objects of the everyday life, evoking the activities around the hearth of a true common room (cradle, spinning wheel, kitchen utensils, ...). We can also admire a set of earthenware, and glazed earthenware.

The most important section, in quantity and quality, of the museum's collections concerns the painting of the 16th and 17th centuries. The biggest names are represented, around the Van Dyck, Rubens and Teniers workshops, as well as the main categories of Flemish painting: still life, portraiture, mythology, history, without forgetting the religious scenes and the jewels' pieces. treasure of the church Saint-Eloi. A room is named after Lucien Jonas. Painter born in Anzin, he was a friend of Father Lemire and realized the monumental Fall of the tyrant that occupies a wall of the room. This space is dedicated to academic painting of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As part of the Parisian salons, the artists of the time made their work known to patrons and collectors. Thus, Emile Renard, Paul Mathey and others have signed commissioned portraits as more personal works.

Finally, the last four rooms host temporary exhibitions, at a rate of two per year. These rooms also allow, through a renewed hanging, to present works held in reserves. The Hazebrouck museum has the "Musée de France" label.
