Its initial Fund comes from the works seized during the revolutionary confiscations carried out in 1794 in the religious and civil city buildings. Should however the greater part of his wealth to the fabulous cabinet of curiosities of the marquis Christophe Paul de Robien (1698-1756), Président à mortier of the Parliament of Brittany, which there had gathered an impressive collection of works and objects of all periods. With the collection of the marquis de Livois to Angers, it was one of the few provincial collections of ancient painting.

The Musée des beaux-arts of Rennes is encyclopedic, since its collections cover both paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 20th century, objets d'art from Europe but also in Africa and America, that Antiquities regional, Roman, Etruscan, Greek and Egyptian.
