Founded in 1797, it is one of the oldest French provincial museums. It presents works of art covering a period from the fifteenth to the twentieth century.

Its permanent collection, which covers the artistic creation of the fifteenth to the twentieth century, has an exceptional collection of Italian, Flemish and Dutch paintings, as well as important works of the French seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with a remarkable cabinet pastels funds, second in France after the Louvre. Besides 2,000 paintings and 700 sculptures, the museum has a collection of 10,000 drawings and 50,000 prints.
