The Museum is located at the foot of the old town, between the banks of the Gers and the St Mary's Cathedral. It houses the second largest collection of pre-Columbian objects from France after the Quai Branly.

Created December 16, 1793, the Museum is one of the oldest in France. More than 20,000 objects are retained more than 8,000 works of pre-Columbian art.

The Museum's collections are organized around six sections:
-Pre-Columbian Archaeology (the 2nd public collection of France),
-Latin American sacred art,
-Egyptian Antiquities
-Local Archaeology (Gallo-Roman Antiquities)
