Presentation
The History Museum is housed in the former barracks, in the heart of the Citadel. The collections reveal the different phases of the history of Belfort, and its region, through the presentation of several hundred objects characteristic of military life but also of local history from prehistory to the twentieth century. Sculptures, paintings, objects, costumes, weapons, souvenirs related to the defense of Belfort in 1870 are to be discovered within the Museum. This ensemble, of great wealth, that wars and conflicts have strengthened and enriched to finally give them their singularity or their curiosity.

The history of the Museum is closely linked to that of the Belfortaine Emulation Society, which contributes to the archaeological and historical background. The excavations undertaken in Belfort and its surroundings have allowed to acquire many testimonies of the occupation of the territory since the prehistory (material neolithic of the caves of Cravanche) until the High Middle Ages (necropolis burgonde of Bourogne) while passing by the period Gallo-Roman (Offemont potter's studio, mosaic of Bavilliers).

In 1968 Pierre Boigeol, a textile manufacturer, offered the city of Belfort its collection of more than eight hundred military objects. This donation is the birth certificate of the Museum of History, soon enriched by many other gifts.
