The underground Museum is located at the foot of the roche de Solutré. It is one of the few existing sites having preserved traces of prehistoric life between 40 000 and 10 000 years before our era. Upper Paleolithic cultures are represented, as well as the collections of one of the richest deposit prehistoric of Europe. Indeed, the site was common for more than 25 000 years by men from the upper Palaeolithic, for the purpose of hunting, butchering and smoke thousands of horses and reindeer.

The site of Solutré is also famous for having given its name to a culture of the upper Palaeolithic: the solutrean, characterized by its "Laurel leaves" Masterpieces - the size of the Flint.
