The museum is dedicated to the Spanish painters in general and Francisco Goya in particular. It is located in the former Bishop's Palace, built in 1675 in terms of Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect of Versailles. The palace is also famous for its gardens designed by André Le Nôtre.

The museum was created in 1840 following the acquisition by the city of Castres a few tables and a collection of mineralogy and zoology.

Goya museum collections are eclectic, ranging from Spanish religious art to modern and contemporary art, through the decorative arts or pre-Columbian art. The museum also has a collection of military weapons, a coin collection and a collection of ceramics Faïencerie Castres.
