Picasso's contemporary, Alberto Magnelli (1888-1971) was a Florentine painter, pioneer of abstract art. During the second world war, he took refuge in Grasse where he lived from 1940 to 1970.

The museum has an exceptional collection of works by the artist that have been gathered by Magnelli his lifetime. He wanted in fact that his personal collection, collection of which it was said that it contained the essential milestones of his work is preserved intact in a town near Grasse. On the death of the artist, his widow, Susi Magnelli donated this collection to the museum in Vallauris. Since then, other donations were added to that legacy.
