Musée Maritime de l'Ile Tatihou

Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue | Archéologie - Ethnologie
€2.5 - €5
The maritime Museum of the island of Tatihou is located in a building of the former Lazaretto of the island of Tatihou, in the harbour of the port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. It is thanks to the rehabilitation of the island in 1990 that this project was born.

When it opened to the public in 1992, the maritime Museum of the island of Tatihou had first designed the conservation and presentation of archaeological material from underwater excavations carried out on wrecks tell la Hogue. Located a few kilometers from the island, five wrecks are remnants of large french line vessels burned on 3 June 1692, at the end of the battle of Barfleur - la Hogue. They were the subject of campaigns of excavations from 1991 to 1995, which are the only testimonies of the fleet of Colbert and the existence of the soldiers and sailors aboard large ships of the line at that time.
It is against this historical fact of naval combat that the modern history of Tatihou is incorporated: fortifications of Vauban, lazaret, the museum of natural history research type of Paris and development projects for the Bay.
