The museum was created in 1952 by Matisse himself who gave the town of Le Cateau a collection of 82 works. The museum is now housed in the town hall. In 1956, Auguste Herbin offers 24 works in the city as well as a second collection. In 1982, while his collections have been enriched by many donations, the museum is housed in the former palace Fenelon. He became county museum in 1992. Expanded and refurbished from the late 1990s, it reopened November 8, 2002 after three years of work.

Seventeen rooms, approximately 4600 square meters, the museum houses more than 170 works by Matisse, plus 65 paintings by Auguste Herbin, paintings by Geneviève Claisse, parent and student Herbin, the entire Tériade donation and 30 photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson collection. The museum also has four paintings by Fernand Léger.
