Musée Municipal La Charité-sur-Loire

La Charité-sur-Loire | Archéologie - Arts décoratifs - Beaux-Arts - Ethnologie
Created in 1954 to house the donation made to the town by Victor Gautron du Coudray, poet and nivernais scholar, the Museum occupies a particular 18th century hotel built in a park overlooking the Loire.
The main interest of the Museum lies in the presentation, at the level of the cellars, objects from the archaeological research carried out in the enclosure of the Priory founded in La Charité by the monks of Cluny in 1059.

The remains of the Church Saint-Laurent, annex to the Great Priory our Lady, cemetery the monks and service buildings, have produced important furniture (culinary pottery, architectural decorations: paving tiles, sculpture...), which allows to trace the daily life of a large monastic establishment in the middle-ages.

Upstairs are presented collections of decorative objects gathered by a charitois in the 1930s: periods Art Nouveau and Art deco contain vases by Lalique, Galle, Daum..., a collection of Sèvres porcelain, works of the brothers Louchet, Théodore Deck, Fauré.

The Museum, which also collected a large part of the workshop of Alfredo Pina, (Milan 1887 - Mesves/Loire 1966), practitioner of Rodin, exposes beside bronzes and marbles, the comp wax of a "Tomb of Dante".

A last room is devoted to the work and the production of files and rasps tailors, many in the Township, 19th in the middle of the 20th century.
