Musée National Pablo Picasso, la Guerre et la Paix

Vallauris | Modern and Contemporary Art
€3 - €6
The Picasso Museum in Vallauris features two works by Picasso War and Peace, installed in the chapel of Vallauris since 1959.

Picasso's choice of the chapel for the edification of his Temple of Peace is part of a rediscovery of the sacred art, which has been an undeniable excitement in the 1950s: Matisse completes the decoration of the Chapelle du Rosaire Vence Chagall - and Bonnard, Léger, Germaine Richier ... - participated in the decoration of the church of Our Lady of All Grace of Plateau d'Assy, and began work on his monumental Biblical Message, that initially intended for another Vence chapel before donating it to the state. Pablo Picasso, aware of the deep symbolism of the place and seduced by the strict proportions of the austere building, chose the chapel of Vallauris. The old building helps to give War and Peace, with its obvious references to ancient art, even rock art, sacred and universal anchorage.
