The museum's collections cover archeology, history, arts and traditions and fine arts. Significant emphasis is placed on the work of portrait painter Jean-Jacques Henner Alsatian. A collection of celts started in 1874 has led to the creation of the museum in 1877 by Gustave Kubler who was the first curator.

Since 1952 the museum is located near the town hall, in the former home of the Bailiff, a building dating from the sixteenth century.
