Musée Westercamp

Wissembourg | Archéologie - Ethnologie - Histoire
Westercamp The museum is located in the historic district of Wissembourg, the ramparts. This is one of the oldest museums in Alsace; it was founded by a local scientific society, the "Altertumsverein" between 1911 and 1913, on the eve of the First World War.

This is Paul Westercamp (1839-1920), patron and collector, who financed the purchase by the City, a beautiful wood-framed residence in order to install the museum.
The set actually consists of two originally separate houses and joined later. The most opulent 1599 vintage and rich sculptural decoration seems to have been originally a wine house. The second, more sober, was dated 1417 by a recent study of dendrochronology.
A third building, built in 1806 and separated from the main building by a small garden, is an ancient market in hops.
