Museu Calouste Gulbenkian - Founder's Collection

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is the largest Portuguese Museum and is worthy of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao or the Louvre in Paris.

Full park, the museum was built according to the precepts of Frank Lloyd Wright and fits perfectly into the landscape.

It is not named after a Portuguese navigator or a great king but a stanbouliote who made his fortune in oil. He wanted a place for visitors to discover their private collections.

Beyond the collection, the famous art lover created a foundation that supports contemporary art and offers scholarships to artists worldwide.

He devoted much of his fortune to purchase some of the finest paintings in the world.

He was the recipient including many works from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg such as the Centaurs of Rubens, Rembrandt's portrait of an old man and other works of the great names of European painting like Van Dyck and Quentin de la Tour.

But art is not left with pieces from all eras from Egypt through Greek art to art deco.
