The Pontal House Museum, a private institution with public purposes, is the result of a life Project undertaken by French designer Jacques Van Beuque (1922-2000). Graduated in Fine Arts in Lyon, France, he arrived in Brazil after the World War II, working as Exhibition designer to large companies and settling in Rio de Janeiro.

On account of business trips, he was delighted with the artistic production of popular origin and soon began to acquire them, starting his collection driven by personal taste. For over 40 years, he visited towns and villages and established friendships with many artists.

In 1991, part of the collection was registered as a cultural landmark of the city of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, on the initiative of his son, the mathematician and philosopher Guy Van Beuque, who too over the institution from 1995 to 2004, the year of his death. Since then, the museum has been managed by anthropologist Angela Mascelani, widow of Guy, and a team of professionals.

Today, it is considered the most representative of folk art in Brazil.
