The museum contains costumes, sculpture, stage and costume designs and memorabilia that belonged to St. Petersburg's theatrical elite

The interior entrance to the museum is by a staircase with the original marble stair treads covered with glass. Etched in each riser is the signature of a famous personality. Among the museum's treasures is a "polyphon," an early version of a jukebox. For 5 kopeks, a variety of music could be heard which emanated from large metal discs inside the box. The polyphon is in fine working order and on occasion, museum staff demonstrates how it operates.

A bust of Mikhail Fokine by Isamu Noguchi is centered among costumes from Russia's leading theatrical designers. One of the most moving installations is the memorial list of over 350 actors executed [as "enemies of the people"] by Stalin. Film footage of historic performances is run continually throughout the museum. There is also a children's section with hands-on demonstrations of sound effects, props and costumes. The museum has a small theatre where conferences and performances are held.
