Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Bordeaux

Bordeaux | Sciences de la nature
The museum of natural history in Bordeaux presents the public with numerous collections of specimens of the animal world. It is closed until 2015 for the renovation work.

Established in 1811, the cabinet of natural history is located in the former Hall of the Academy. It is then only a part of the building named 'The Museum' which includes the library, the Gallery of paintings, the Museum of the ancient and the school of drawing. In 1862, the collections are moved in the Lisleferme hotel, in the public garden. The former law firm becomes museum. In 1952, three additional rooms of this mansion of the 18th assigned with the departure of the prehistoric and ethnographic museum to the Museum of Aquitaine.

In 1811, the first collections are derived from private firms, such as François-de-Paule Latapie (Professor of natural history at the Central School of the Gironde) and Bernard Journu-Auber (politician, scholar, magistrate and Bordeaux shipowner). Today, involving several thousand specimens from around the world, they have been enriched over time as a result dozens of donations and acquisitions.
