The museum is housed in the former palace of the governor of Aunis.

Located since 1832 in the former Government House, given to the city by Napoleon during his visit in 1808 and renamed "The flaw museum," the museum reopened Oct. 27, 2007 after ten years of work that helped create conditioned to redevelop the garden and especially double the exhibition area (2300 m2) compared to that once existed reserves, also increasing the auditorium for conferences.

The museum offers 2300 m2 of exhibition space spread over two areas, natural history and ethnography, well represented by collections of primary importance because of the quality of an old collection including some from the nineteenth century sailors and explorers region, while others come from large collections like that of André Breton.
