Born in 1788, Esprit Requien takes charge of the Musée Calvet in 1849 naturalist at heart, this eminent botanist, paleontologist and malacologist is an important reference collection which he left in 1840 to administer the Calvet museum: the natural History Museum of Avignon is born and takes the name of its founder.

Collections moved multiple times until settling in 1940 in the hotel Raphaelis of Soissans. Completely renovated, there remains this modest building as the front and two inside stone arches of the south.

The collections of the museum Requien have constantly enriched since the end of last century by many amateur and regional scientific legacy, but also thanks to the research activities of the institution. Among the most notable include seagrass Requien of Loiseleur Deslongchamps and Jean Henri Fabre, the series of mid-Cretaceous ammonites of Bulot, ground beetles Pelissier, fossil brown bears from the Mont Ventoux.
