The Ponte Vecchio, landmark of Florence, is located on the river Arno that can be reached from the Duomo (cathedral) via the via Roma.
The origin of the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) dates back to 120 AD. JC to allow passage of the Via Cassia (an ancient Roman road) on the Arno. River floods at this time regularly destroyed the structures until the construction in 1345 of a fully stone bridge which allowed the installation of shops.
In 1593, excess odor rising from the shops (butchers - fishmongers - tanners) decided Ferdinand to only authorize the noble arts - (Jewellers - goldsmiths) - still in business today.

In the middle of the bridge a small square offers a magnificent view over the Arno and the bridges that cross it.
