The rock Aiguilhe called "chimney volcano", takes its name from the tapered shape of the profile. Its height is 82 m. The chapel built atop dated tenth century. Its end bell shaped minaret seems to prolong the rocky finger. It is reached by a staircase of 268 steps. In 950-951, Gothescalk, bishop of Puy, headed the first French pilgrimage to Saint Jacques de Compostela. On his return, a chapel dedicated to St. Michael was built on the volcanic rock Aiguilhe. It was completed in 962.
