David Ireland (1930-2009) was an architect and conceptual artist living and working in San Francisco. In 1975 he purchased a house in the Mission District and turned it into an artwork. Now thanks to arts patron Carlie Wilmans, the house is the 500 Capp Street Foundation, a museum and tribute to David Ireland. You’re walking into a living, breathing conceptual sculpture. Everything has been made or altered by him. It’s really special—it’s not just paintings on the wall, and it totally makes you think about art in a different way.

Make sure you carve out a chunk of time and head downstairs to check out their archives, which deal with San Francisco history, architectural history, and visual art history.
