The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo was Japan’s first national art museum. The regular “Modern Japanese Art” exhibition allows visitors to view works from the collection that show trends in Japanese art from the beginning of the 20th century, and special exhibitions are also held to showcase works from inside and outside Japan.

Noteworthy features of the permanent collection are portraits by early Japanese modernist Kishida Ryusei and wartime paintings. The 1969 building, designed by Taniguchi Yoshiro was renovated in 2001.
