The collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is the largest in the world with more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and nearly 700 handwritten letters (especially the correspondence with his brother Theo). However, the pieces are displayed in rotation. This means that the visitor sees only fifty pieces at a time.

This extraordinary museum that attracts over a million visitors a year, does not expose as paintings by Van Gogh, as well as works by contemporary artists that influenced the painter or were influenced by him. Thus one can admire the paintings of Emile Bernard, Gustave Boulanger, Jules Breton, Maurice Denis, Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Seurat, Kees van Dongen or Lawrence Alma Tadema.
